Propensity Score Matching for Causal Inference with Relational Data

چکیده
Propensity score matching (PSM) is a widely used method for performing causal inference with observational data. PSM requires fully specifying the set of confounding variables of treatment and outcome. In the case of relational data, this set may include nonintuitive relational variables, i.e., variables derived from the relational structure of the data. In this work, we provide an automated method to derive these relational variables based on the relational structure and a set of naive confounders. This automatic construction includes two unusual classes of variables: relational degree and entity identifiers. We provide experimental evidence that demonstrates the utility of these variables in accounting for certain latent confounders. Finally, through a set of synthetic experiments, we show that our method improves the performance of PSM for causal inference with relational data.

Propensity Score Methods for Causal Inference with the PSMATCH Procedure
In a randomized study, subjects are randomly assigned to either a treated group or a control group. Random assignment ensures that the distribution of the covariates is the same in both groups and that the treatment effect can be estimated by directly comparing the outcomes for the subjects in the two groups. In contrast, subjects in an observational study are not randomly assigned. In order to...
متن کاملMatching and Propensity Scores
The popularity of matching techniques has increased considerably during the last decades. They are mainly used for matching treatment and control units in order to estimate causal treatment effects from observational studies or for integrating two or more data sets that share a common subset of covariates. In focusing on causal inference with observational studies, we discuss multivariate match...
متن کاملContrails: Causal Inference Using Propensity Scores
Contrails are clouds caused by airplane exhausts, which geologists contend decrease daily temperature ranges on Earth. Following the 2001 World Trade Center attack, cancelled domestic flights triggered the first absence of contrails in decades. Resultant exceptional data capacitated causal inference analysis by propensity score matching. Estimated contrail effect was 6.8981°F.
متن کاملMultilevel Propensity Score Methods for Estimating Causal Effects: A Latent Class Modeling Strategy
Despite their appeal, randomized experiments cannot always be conducted, for example, due to ethical or practical reasons. In order to remove selection bias and draw causal inferences from observational data, propensity score matching techniques have gained increased popularity during the past three decades. Although propensity score methods have been studied extensively for single-level data, ...

Motivated by the evaluation of the effect of GATT, we investigate the role of network information in propensity score matching. Under the assumption of strong ignorability, propensity score matching (PSM) is a widely used technique in causal inference studies to adjust for bias arising from an unbalanced distribution of observed confounders between a treatment and a control group. Both theoreti...
